  • Life is a mystery. News of a dear friend's untimely and sudden death had Jacki and me reeling. So many thoughts, questions, and theories. We traveled silently through a forest of spruce only speaking on occasion. Eventually we climbed to a ridge and looked out across the central Wasatch Mountains. Anger, frustration, confusion, tears. Our hearts are broken.

  • The details of an ancient limber pine in the Days Fork, Wasatch Mountains. During the late 1800's to early 1900's the forests of the Wasatch were clear cut. Much of what is seen today is what has been replanted, beginning in the 1920's. Ocassionally while hiking the Wasatch you may come across one of these gradfather trees… some believe they were left standing because they were too twisted to be used for lumber.

  • Once the spruce beetle burrows beneath the bark of a mature spruce tree they lay their eggs in galleries. Once the larvae hatch they create more galleries feasting on the phloem of the tree, which leads to the death of the spruce.
